How-to Disable Gemini’s Response to ‘Hey Google’ and Voice Match
Imagine that the only annoying thing was Gemini’s ability to respond to your voice commands like “Hey Google” and you just want to disable that only, without removing Gemini. You can simply disable that option only like so:
- Open the main "Settings" of your phone
- Locate and Tap "Google"
- Select "All services"
- Select "Search, Assistant and Voice"
- Select "Gemini"
- Select "’Hey Google’ and Voice Match"
- Toggle Off "Hey Google"
- Toggle Off "While Driving"

Google’s AI (Artificial Intelligence) tools and technology by far is the best available, but if you’re not using it, and if privacy is a concern for you, then, disabling and or removing it completely can improve your device performance as well as usability of your smartphone.
Thank you
My wife has an android tablet. She is locked out of her tablet by Gemini. The tablet will not open at all. Gemini want her to install the Gemini app to continue. We don’t want to use Gemini at all. What can we do? Help.
Hi Ray, what you are describing is NOT something Gemini App does. I would 110% take this Tablet to your local IT/Phone/Tablet professional to get it checked out.
Thank you for this detailed guide about this annoying feature. I’ve been looking for a way to disable Gemini without confusing steps, and your instructions were clear and easy to follow. I appreciate the screenshots too as they really helped work out this.
Great to hear that it worked for your phone.
There is NO uninstall button in either place you mention. No trashcan in Playstore, no uninstall button in the app settings (only forcestop and disable).
Hello Mike, same issue was reported by others. Note: if there is NO Google Play Store Uninstall option.
This means “Gemini” App is NOT installed on your device. Find the setting within this image https://www.rankya.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/TurnOff-Digital-Assistant.png and press on the link to disable Digital Assistant from Google.
Next: through your “Settings > App” force stop ‘Assistant’ and Disable it.
Please do let us know the outcome.
