Google Hummingbird Revisited

Google Hummingbird Update

Reading through the search engine scene updates and finding information on other inadequate, I will present insights you should be aware of about the algorithm Google introduced and didn’t talk much about “” update” so that you can optimize your landing pages easily targeting and ranking long tailed keywords more efficiently.

First, this isn’t’ about E=MC2 type of math, and you should start to think like Google to understand all the updates it reveals to general public (and the ones they introduce behind closed doors). Using our common sense, we can realize that just like any type of business, Google also has to improve its customer service, and also compete in this very profitable digital advertising space.

Google is Google because of (think billions of dollars each year through Google Adwords Pay Per Click Advertising) but Facebook just snuck up and so did Apple to carve a large slice of the PPC pie. Since Facebook now has the customer base (over 1 billion registered users and growing, and now also offers you the ability to to that 1 billion of registered users (right down to their locations and interests (interests analyzed through comments and likes they did previously basically assures targeted advertising as good as Google Adwords).

Now the mobile device market is growing exponentially and Apple (being the biggest multinational company in the World) with their Iphone being so popular with new technologies such as Siri (artificial intelligence at its infancy) internet search market scene is hotting up with competition that is a great news for website owners like me and you.

What options are available for Google to keep up with all the newcomers? How can Google compete in this ever growing mobile device market which the next generation (perhaps yourself if you are a young person) uses?

Improve Relevancy and Eliminate Spam

Think of it this way, when you type 3 words in Google search box, before Google Hummingbird algorithm update, engine calculated for results based on its ability to determine the meaning of a single keyword, running calculations on its cached (stored) web documents, and then brought you results based on that calculation done on each keyword (even if you typed 3 words, the results was given to you based on each word combined with AND calculation (think of AND also represented as && are called logical operations in computer science)).

Google Looks at Meta Tags

Here’s An Example

Let us say you are searching Google with these 3 words Internet Expert Australia — Then what Google did before the hummingbird algo update was this: internet AND expert AND australia — So therefore, results set can never be accurate due to the complexity of human language and the fact that the meaning of words can differ. In this search example, I could be looking for so many different things related to experts in Australia, am I looking for internet experts who could help me setup my internet connection, or, am I looking for internet service expert provider in Australia?

Let’s think like Google! Instead of running default calculations basing the algorithm on AND operation on each keyword, why don’t we look at the data set we collected over the years from humanities search habits and use that data set to figure out that if John Smith is searching for a Pizza Joint in Melbourne, and then let us calculate the result set basing it on “Pizza Joint in Melbourne” notice the quotes (wrapping double quotes around your keywords was there previously as an ) (so that’s nothing new). Meaning, when you search Google wrapping the words within double quotes, you are already telling Google to search for the whole set of words (those familiar with Google Adwords will recognize that as ““)

So instead of trying to work out if the searcher is looking for Internet AND Expert AND Australia let’s just say he or she is looking for “Internet Expert Australia” (notice the quotes). As you can see, testing better algorithms on its current data set of past searchers, Google can deliver better results because it just must to keep its customers happy. Thus “Google Hummingbird”

Simple Consideration for Original Web Copywriting

Your focus and reasoning shouldn’t change when creating new content (web copy including images/videos or any other form of content) must be based on the concept that you are creating content for your website visitors best interest (highlighting your products and services value for your websites visitors) before you even think about keywords is a good start. Then, once you are happy with the web copy (how it sounds like, spelling checks, how it looks), you can then ask “Okay, where in this document’s flow would my target keywords would fit?”.

All you then have to do is include those keywords (as well as long tailed keywords if you are targeting them). This will allow you to not only get the SEO copywriting right, but also increase your visit duration of your visitors.

Basically, as long as you use keywords in the order you are targeting them at least 2 times (including variations and synonyms) in your web page then you are covering most of the factors which are within your control as a website owner, and doing so will allow you to get better results “both Google rankings and also higher conversions”.
